for the time being.
It had been felt that the Secretary
of State was properly able to rely on the Governor's judgment and knowledge of local conditions, and on the
newly appointed Vice-Chancellor's expert knowledge of University affairs under Eastern conditions.
It should be noted, however, that the
possibility of a more comprehensive enquiry by a Commission
representing outside expert opinion had not been abandoned
altogether, At the same time, since the future of the
University was intimately affected by its relations with
South China, it was felt that such an enquiry would be
more valuable when peaceful conditions had again been
established in that area.
Trinidad.
(ii)
Central Training Institute.
The Trustees of the Carnegie Corporation,
New York, had sanctioned a grant of $60,000/towards the
total sum of $180,000 required for the establishment of
establi
a Central Training Institute in Trinidad. This Institute
was being developed out of the existing Training College for teachers in Trinidad, in order to/serve the needs of
elementary school teachers not only in Trinidad, but also
in the Windward and Leeward Islands and in any other West
Indian Colony which might wish to take advantage of it.
(iii) He was circulating amongst members during the meeting an interesting periodical entitled "Chorus"
the Journal of the Singapore Teachers' Association.

Mr. Lusby reported that Dr. Burstal 1,
who unfortunately had had to retire from the Committee
owing to 111-health, had replied to the letter which
the Committee had sent to her, saying that she was deeply touched by the Committee's kindness.
